Palestinian National Curriculum at UNRWA Schools and the Encroachments of the Israeli Knesset

Press release

Department of Educational Media

2/03//2014

The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) appeals to all international organizations to guarantee human rights for all Palestinian refugees, including the right of return to their homeland, their right to life, education, as well as to protect their national and cultural identity, and  collective memories.

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education, (as an official Ministry in the State of Palestine), and in line with the international law, ensures the important role of all international organizations in Palestine (i.e. UNRWA). These organizations should be respected and protected, and never be implicated by any mean in any political propaganda as is happening now in the Israeli Knesset concerning the UNRWA's decision of applying the Palestinian curricula  in their schools.

The Israel Authorities are restlessly trying to instigate international organizations that support Palestine by changing and distorting the facts, seeking to turn the compass from the real tragedy of the Palestinian refugees which started in 1948, and extended to grandchildren in refugee camps until now.

In this regard, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education deplores this provocative attitude against UNRWA as a prelude to force the Israeli's ideas and curriculum on the Palestinian people under occupation. The Ministry also condemns the Israeli violations against the international humanitarian law and all United Nations conventions, such as, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 1966, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, ……etc.

The MoEHE strongly urges all humanitarian advocates to stop the Israeli propaganda against the Palestinian National Curriculum. The Israeli curriculum is one of the typical sources for prejudice, aggressive thoughts and bloodshed that the government provides for  Israeli children, and that was confirmed clearly by several studies and international reports written by Israeli researchers and academics themselves ;such as, Nurit Peled – Elhanan / professor of Education and Dr. Eli Foda.  These studies confirm and criticize the Israeli refusal to join the Tripartite Commission for the discussion of incitement on both sides.

The MoEHE kindly urges all and international organizations and diplomatic missions in Palestine to condemn and denounce the Israeli extremists' practices against the humanitarian organizations and their interference in the UNRWA's work and methodology, twisting the real values of the Palestinian curriculum.

The Ministry calls upon the international community to intervene and protect the right to education for all Palestinian children and stop the Israeli violations against childhood, denial of Palestinian prisoners from their right to education, the negligence policy against the Jerusalemite children and distortion of the National Curriculum.
